Leave Letter is a letter written by a person to his/her authority explaining and/or requesting leave of absence due to family, health or personal issues for a certain period of time. Leave of absence letter is provided in advance so that the authorities are well informed about your absence and can make any required replacements etc. Having said that there are situations where you provide letter of absence after you have taken a leave which could be due to an emergency, catastrophe etc. Here you inform, explain and/or apologise about your absence after you have taken leave. School leave letter or Letter of absence for school and leave letter for office (letter of absence from work) are the two most common letters written. Other educational and official setups like Military also require the service of such a type of letter. Writing a letter of absence is a compulsory and conventional official practice and cannot be ignored. Doing so can land one in troubled waters as it amounts to breach of conduct. It is the sole responsibility of the writer to write such letters as the concerned authority can take strict action against the writer. If the writer has a copy of the letter he/she can claim to have informed the authorities. Almost all the firms have the provision of a certain number of leaves for the employees and the duration and conditions for it vary. One should be aware of the rules and regulations before applying for a leave letter of absence.

Letter of leave of absence is a type of formal letter and comes under few categories of other types of letters. Letter of explanation for absence is by and large a request letter because of the request factor and an application letter as it seeks to inform the addressee. When the reason for writing a letter of absence is due to sickness or health it is called as medical leave letter, medical leave of absence, or sick leave letter. When the leave of absence is followed by another absence letter requesting or informing the addressee for extending the leave it is called Extended Letter of Absence. However, there is no befitting term for letters written due to personal or family related issues. Related terms like absence excuse letter, letter for absence and letter to explain absence are also used to address such letters. It is also addressed with an abbreviation – LOA which is self explanatory.
